Photos – Sharks and the Amazing Underwater World of Rhode Island

On August 7, 2025, QCC’s Wildlife and Habitat committee hosted adventurer, diver and photojournalist for the Atlantic Shark Institute Tomas Koeck who gave us a talk and slide show highlighting the underwater habitat off the Rhode Island coast. As a shark researcher, tagger and videographer, he emphasized that the most common sharks off our coast are dogfish and mako sharks. The former are harmless, and the latter are much less dangerous than great whites with only a handful of mako-caused human injuries ever recorded. Over the next year, Koeck is hoping to raise the needed funding for a full-length documentary of Rhode Island’s offshore habitat.
