Targeted, pollinator‑friendly tick prevention stops ticks without harming bees, butterflies, or other beneficial insects. Read below for safer and more effective strategies than blanket yard spraying.

Ticks have been in the news a lot lately with dire predictions about the increase in their populations.

Before blasting your property with systemic pesticides – please think again. Even the so-called “natural” pesticides like permethrin (which is a synthetic chemical based on a chrysanthemum extract) kills all insects and arachnids.

So, if you enjoy having honey on your English muffins, seeing butterflies flutter around your garden or are troubled by the drastic decline in pollinators, consider other approaches.

The risk of tick-borne illness can be drastickally reduced by other means like spraying a permethrin containing liquid on shoes and clothing, the liberal use of Deet or lemon eucalyptus oil-containing insect repellants and doing thorough body checks after being in tick habitat like tall grass or shrubby understory.

Prior to the turn of the year, a new Osprey Nesting Platform was raised by the Getman family in Quonnie. Click on the photo below to view a video of the raising, and background on the project!
