Fall Tip: Minimize exterior lighting during bird migration
Migration season has begun; some species are already enroute, but large numbers continue to fly over New England throughout September and October. This makes it especially important to minimize exterior lighting during this time period, as well as the spring migration (March 15th – May 15th). Millions of migrating birds die each year from building impacts caused by light pollution.
For amazing night by night real-time maps of the numbers of birds migrating over an area check out BirdCast, a combined effort of the EPA, the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology (among others).
