On Wednesday, May 28th, join Bill McNee and the Quonochontaug Conservation Collaborative (QCC) for a guided bird walk at the Quonochontaug Breachway, where we will be in search of shorebirds, songbirds, raptors and more.
We’ll kick the walk off promptly at 8am from the Quonnie Breachway parking lot, initially walk out onto the spit of sand overlooking the salt marshes to the east and extending out into Quonochontaug Pond — in search of oystercatchers, plovers, sandpipers, terns, gulls, cormorants, osprey, dowitchers, yellowlegs, herons, and egrets, among other species. As time is available, we’ll also try and survey along the road leading to the breachway — where we’ll hopefully see (and hear) warblers, blackbirds, waxwings, orioles, sparrows, flycatchers, swallows, woodpeckers and more.
Bring your binoculars! Spotting scopes will come in handy as we head out onto the spit of sand (however, they can be put away once we return to the main parking lot). Bring water, bug spray and sturdy shoes as appropriate. This is an easy walk on flat terrain. A porta potty is available at the breachway parking lot.
PARKING
Parking is limited at the breachway, so get there early to secure a spot. Otherwise, carpool, walk, bike, or arrange for a drop-off. All are safe and recommended alternatives! If driving and the main parking lot if full, you can often park in the cutout area along the breachway itself, roughly 1500 ft from the main breachway parking lot area.
Pre-registration is not required for this event.
